Additional Information:
The Broken Group Islands is an archipelago of over 100 unique islands and islets in Barkley Sound, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. Each island is unique in terms of terrain, beaches, and campgrounds. To protect the fragility of the island's flora and fauna, there are designated campsites and totally funky composting toilets. Some of the campsites are located right on the sandy beaches, while others are nestled under towering red cedars and Sitka spruce. Paddling in this area is incredible and includes a bit of everything - open coast, protected passages, warm lagoons, and narrow channels all teeming with intertidal organisms, seals, sea lions, porpoises, and whales. Barkley Sound was the most densely populated region on the west coast prior to the arrival of Europeans. Your guides will help you discover evidence of ancient villages and defensive sites, stone fish traps, and canoe runs that make the life history of these early inhabitants more tangible and inspiring. This is a relaxing and enjoyable adventure for anyone with a passion for wildlife and an interest in casual kayaking and hiking. It is suitable for all skill levels. No paddling experience is necessary.

Itinerary

The evening before our departure we like to meet with our guests at a local restaurant to answer last minute questions and to hand out dry bags for your gear. Your guide will pick you up in the Steller van at 8:00am Monday morning to begin your adventure. After a 50 minute drive through the lush rain forest we arrive at beautiful Toquart Bay. After a basic paddling and safety orientation, we'll launch the kayaks and head off on our Broken Group Island adventure. Our arrival time and our choice of camping destinations will depend upon the physical ability of the group and the weather conditions. The Broken Group is divided into a group of outer islands exposed to the rhythm of to open ocean and a group of inner islands with protected beaches and a labyrinth of passages and small channels. The intertidal ecology of each island group is unique and fascinating. Depending upon the weather we like to move camp at least once so that we can explore the uniqueness of both island groups. Wherever we camp, there will be luxurious, yet funky composting toilets that are lovingly maintained by Park Staff, and great places to pitch our tents in the forest and on the beach.
