Kayaking in the Queen Charlotte Strait Map of Queen Charlotte Strait

Queen Charlotte Strait Our kayak tours of Queen Charlotte Strait have quickly become a favourite with our guests due to the rich inter-tidal and marine mammal life found combined with the remoteness of this area.

Queen Charlotte StraitQueen Charlotte Strait lies between Vancouver Island's uninhabited north-eastern coastline and the snow-capped mountains of mainland British Columbia. It contains a ruggedly beautiful maze of islands and channels with narrow, constricted passages, fjord-like inlets, large islands and a tangled maze of tiny, weather-beaten islets. This area includes Broughton Archipelago, a region noted for its rich aboriginal habitation, such as Mamaliculla, an abandoned native village on Village Island. Broughton Archipelago Provincial Marine Park encompasses dozens of undeveloped islands and islets situated at the mouth of Knight Inlet on the west side of Queen Charlotte Strait.

Queen Charlotte Strait A number of our kayak tours explore these and many other islands that lie between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Our kayak tours also cross the Strait to the Central Coast of British Columbia, an area that lies in the southern portion of the Great Bear Rainforest, one of the last great wildlife refuges in North America.

Some of the large mammals we often see as we kayak Queen Charlotte Strait include humpback whales, Minke whales, Pacific white sided dolphins, Dall's porpoises, sea lions and Orcas. The inter-tidal life (sea stars, anemones, urchins, etc) is spectacular! Chance encounters with Orcas (killer whales) are possible on these tours as we lie within part of the foraging range of northern resident orcas that frequent Johnstone Strait and Robson Bight Ecological Reserve further to the south.
