While there is a bit of a stretch of winter creeping up, in not so many months summer will again reign supreme on Vancouver Island. On the "Island", peak kayak season is from mid-July to the first week in August. This means almost all of our regular departures have filled up (we limit our groups to 8) and people who have waited a little longer to book are anxiously waiting for our word on cancellations. Sometimes we can deliver, sometimes we can’t.

Please don’t let this be you! Whether you’re booking for yourself or for a group, please book early for the summer of 2012. While we take a 20% deposit, we don’t take the balance of your payment until 60 days out. Thus you can relax, knowing your kayak seat is safe and a great vacation is not far off.

Last week heralded the beginning of our busy booking season. 30% our our seats for Vancouver Island are sold and a number of departures are sold out as well, mainly in the last two weeks in July.

For those of you considering Johnstone Strait as a kayak destination, we are expecting the resident orcas as usual by the first week in July. Still, there's lots to see before then including transient orcas, humpback and minke whales, Pacific White-sided dolphins and Da/l's porpoise. The Broken Island Group is a great place to be right now as the waters are almost devoid of kayakers and the shallow waters are warming nicely. Out on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, our base camp at Kyuquot base is set up on the beach, the sea otters are bobbing about - nature is calling!

Here at our office in Victoria the apple blossoms have made their first appearance (I prefer blossoms to groundhogs any day) and I’m busy getting this season’s gear in order - sure signs of spring. Perhaps not so coincidently, kayak bookings are on the rise to the point where we can now confirm almost all departures listed on Vancouver Island Kayak. In fact, a few departures in the Broken Group and in Johnstone Strait are full at eight paddlers. Please feel free to contact us with any questions – let’s move from spring cleaning to summer dreaming!

Here's a fantastic comment we received from Ann after her kayak vacation last August, her second Vancouver Island Kayak tour.

Scott, As we spoke earlier I can't thank you enough for being the facilitator in what truly has to be the best or at at least one of the best holidays of my life. I only say one as my husband is not here and I wish he could have experienced the wonders of British Columbia nature first hand.

I had two wonderful but very different kayak trips. The first to the Broken Island Group and the second up here in Port Mc Neil. I enjoyed both for different reasons. Different geographies. Wildlife and also fellow travellers on the trip but both wonderfully well organised and the natural beauty of this place speaks for itself.

I have to say what stands out for me is the incredible BC training of the sea kayak guides which is very consistent throughout the island and they truly cope with a lot. Different clients of different abililites and they remain jovial. Confidence inspiring and knowledgeable and they all can cook better than most people I know in central London with all mod cons.

The wildlife speaks for itself. I felt privileged and lucky to be close to a beautiful hump back whale one day and a group of sweet trusting harbour seals the next. Both equally enjoyable and seeing them so close and curious rather than threatening is truly awesome and humbling.

Anyone who has never kayaked or been to Vancouver Island is missing out on life and needs to get here for at least 10 days.

Ann
Sent from Blackberry

Here in Victoria the snow is dissipating which we hope is a sign that spring is around the corner. While many others remain locked in winter's grasp, most everyone (except for the die-hard skiers) are thinking of warmer weather. And from my corner of the world, this translates to kayak vacations. In particular, our trips to Haida Gwaii, Johnstone Strait and Broken Group are gathering speed, with a number of departures sold out and some others having one or two seats remaining. Please use our search engine to select a date and trip - if the departure you want is booked please let me know. If the demand is there, I might be able to put on another departure.
