Description of Port Alberni

Port Alberni (population: 17,548) and the pastoral Alberni Valley serve as the gateway to BC’s west coast. Just a 193-km drive northwest from the provincial capital, Victoria, Port Alberni boasts a magnificent, deep-sea port that opens to Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound and the Pacific Ocean. The forest industry remains its economic mainstay, other economies include a growing retiree community and tourism.

Surrounded by freshwater lakes and streams, the area is popular for its salmon sports fishing, as well as for hiking, camping and kayaking. It is from Port Alberni that the sturdy wooden packet freighter MV Frances Barkley makes its daily excursions to Barkley Sound. Some of our kayak tours of the Broken Group Islands depart on these ships from the Quay in downtown Port Alberni.

Plan Now for Summer

Wednesday, October 19 2011

While there is a bit of a stretch of winter creeping up, in not so many months summer will again reign supreme on Vancouver Island.  On the "Island", peak kayak season is from mid-July to the first week in August. This means almost all of our regular departures have filled up (we limit our groups to 8) and people who have waited a little longer to book are anxiously waiting for our word on cancellations. Sometimes we can deliver, sometimes we can’t.

Please don’t let this be you! Whether you’re booking for yourself or for a group, please book early for the summer of 2012.  While we take a 20% deposit, we don’t take the balance of your payment until 60 days out. Thus you can relax, knowing your kayak seat is safe and a great vacation is not far off.
